Last weekend Sevilla could've gotten their hands on the fourth place, but the final results in Granada was 1-1. Today the hosts will get another chance to reach the place leading into the Champions League, even for a day
Last weekend Sevilla finally got to see Valencia's defeat, and had they beaten the weak Granada they could have taken the fourth position they long for and which guarantees them Champions League. But, Unai Emery's team failed and in the end took only a single point in Granada, but the draw's bitter taste was washed out by them passing into the Europa League semi-finals. On Thursday Sevilla scored a draw of 2-2- in St Petersburg and in that way stayed in the gameof defending last year's title.
Unai Emery is pleased with what they've done so far, but he won't allow his team to relax:
- I have to pay respects to my players who are phenomenal both in the league and in Europe. Sadly, we didn't have a lot of time to prepare for Rayo, but despite it all we're counting on our three points. We're hosting uncomfortable opponents who want to outplay anyone and everyone and who won't miss motive on Sanchez Pizjuan, so we have to be on the right, high level.
Except for the already absent Sergio Barbosa and Sebastian Cristofor, Unai Emery also won't be able to count on the injured stopper Nicolas Pareja and midfielder Vitolo. The absences are quite significant, but Emery has a good roster at his disposal and he should be able to replace them without much struggle.
Two weeks ago Rayo were pulverized in Vigo, but a week earlier they beat Almeria with 2-0 on home turf and with three points secured their performance in Primera for the next season. Later years it took less than 40 points to stay in the league, and with this new win they've surpassed that number and now they can play without any pressure until the end of the season.
Despite it all, Paco Jemez today has one goal:
- The only thing worth in Sevilla is winning. Our goal until the end of the season is to earn as many points as we can, so we will try to reach European positions. We know it won't be easy, but why not try? I'm aware what kind of a team we're playing against. If you ask me, Sevilla belongs among three strongest teams in the championship, but we won't say that anyone's better than us in advance.
Jemez can't count on forward Leo Baptista and goalkeeper Cristiano Alvarez, and today he left stopper Ze Castro at home for whom he pointed out he needs in the finals, so he has to let him rest for a while. Back Tito won't be playing because of the suspension.
